When patients are missing many teeth, they are often presented with a variety of options for cosmetically and structurally replacing the missing teeth. The common considerations are dentures (full or partial), dental bridges, or dental implants. Many of our patients have questions as to which alternative is best for them. This depends on a variety of conditions, and these questions can be addressed during a consultation with Dr. Briglia or Dr Nikas at our practice in West Chester, PA.
A common question from patients is, "should I get dental implants instead of dentures or partials?" Dental implants are deemed the ultimate in restorative options when it comes to addressing missing teeth. Dental implants are surgically placed in the bone, so they offer the stability and strength of a natural tooth. Once a dental implant is placed into the jawbone, it fuses to the bone and acts like a natural tooth root. It helps the jaw from wearing away, because chewing forces on the implant stimulate the bone to keep it healthy. If a single tooth is being replaced, the benefits include not having to wear a removable partial denture or having the neighboring teeth, cut down to make a “3-unit” bridge. If a 3-unit bridge is placed, it means the 3 space area is connected together and for the rest of your life you need to use a floss threader to get between the bridge to keep it clean. Thus, it is much healthier for the bone and teeth to have a single implant and crown placed when a single tooth is lost.
If you have a loose or wobbly denture that does not stay in very well, even with denture adhesive, there is help. With as little as a few dental implants, a loose denture or partial denture can be stabilized and be “snapped” into place. In fact, with around 5 dental implants, a denture or set of teeth can be fixed in place. Once screwed in or cemented to the implants, these dentures or full sets of teeth do not come out, look great and give you the feeling of confidence and security while laughing, talking or eating. This provides the ultimate in support and strength, and can solve the problems many patients have with traditional dentures ill-fitting, shifting dentures that are painful or uncomfortable.
An alternative to dental implants is a conventional removable denture or partial. All options are reviewed with our patients to give them the opportunity to choose what they prefer to have completed.
